Emanuel “Manny” Steward (July 7,1944 – October 25, 2012)

Manny,

Rest In Peace, my friend.  We didn’t always agree but I respected much of what we talked about personally and what you said on the air during telecasts.

I especially enjoyed the conversation we had about potential matchups between Bernard “SuperBad” Mays and Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns.  I also thank you for always being available to interview with ESPN Radio.  We enjoyed having you on!  We will mourn you for a short time and then we’ll celebrate your life!!!  – Chip Mitchell (Owner/Journalist… The Fight Journal)

– Robert Uzzell (Journalist/Photographer… The Fight Journal)
A Detroit Legend and overall boxing icon.  I give Emanuel his credit.  He will truly be missed.   I enjoyed his commentary on HBO probably even more than his work as a trainer.  I think that says how much I respect his opinion.

Other thoughts on “Manny”:

– Jonathan Banks (Heavyweight boxer and Steward disciple)
He’s gone but NEVER!! will be forgotten. You fought a good fight you finished your course. With tears i’m saying.. R.I.P. Emanuel steward….   Johnathon Banks @BanksBoxingEnt

 – Wladimir Klitschko (World Heavyweight Champion and Steward-trained fighter)
Boxing has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Emanuel Steward.
Vitali and I, along with the entire Team Klitschko, send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Emanuel’s family and friends.

It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade.

I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship.

My team and I will carry on with the goals we had set while Emanuel was with us because that is exactly what Emanuel would have wanted. I know he will be with us in spirit along the way and we will accomplish these goals in his honor.  Rest in peace Emanuel. You will be greatly missed.  Until we meet again my friend.

REPORT: EMANUEL STEWARD HAS COLON CANCER!

Ringtalk.com’s Pedro Fernandez broke this story….

LOSE EMANUEL & DAYS WILL BE DARK!

San Francisco, CA– Even before Tommy Hearns’ son Ronald Hearns got knocked out on Friday night, word was slowly seeping around the Michigan arena that Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, the US National AAU boxing champion circa 1964, and of course the founder of the Kronk Gym in Detroit, MI, has advanced Colon Cancer . As I sit here and pound out my 30 worlds a minute on my Apple Mac, tears are rolling down my face.

TREATED ME LIKE HIS SON!

Although we have a special bond, Emanuel is close with a lot of people. There is nothing better than talking with him on life, politics, business, boxing, broads, people in boxing, when Emanuel and I get together it’s like two women gossiping. Not afraid to admit it! There are even secret things that I can never broach that Steward and I have discussed in our 30 year friendship. When I stayed in Detroit, he wanted me at his house and not in a hotel!
