In an entertaining battle for the vacant IBF super middleweight title, James “Chunky” DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell (24-2, 16 KOs) on Saturday afternoon at the Agganis Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.
DeGale was cut above his right eye in round two but remained calm as he wiped blood away. His composure paid dividends later in the round as he connected on a huge and well-timed overhand left counter to drop Dirrell. Dirrell got up and seconds later was dropped again by a DeGale combination.
Dirrell came back well in rounds in the next couple of rounds, but DeGale landed some clean shots, and busted Dirrell’s nose and mouth sometime between the fifth and sixth rounds.
Then DeGale seemed to take a few rounds off and allowed Dirrell to gain momentum and outwork him as the fight entered the championship rounds.
DeGale seemed to take control with the harder shots in the final few rounds to secure his win.
Judges scored the fight 117-109, and 114-112 twice.
