The 29-year-old Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) will be challenged by two-time world title challenger, dangerous Colombian knockout artist Miguel “The Scorpian” Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs), the WBO No. 10-ranked contender, in the 12-round main event.

Three exciting fights on the stacked “Lomachenko vs, Marriaga” card, promoted by Top Rank, will air exclusively in Canada on Super Channel.

Super Channel has recently aired major boxing events live like Brook vs. Spence Jr., Pacquiao-Horn, and Eubank, Jr. vs. Abraham.

“we are all ecstatic to be bringing this exciting bout featuring one of the world’s best boxers, Vasyl Lomachenko, to our viewers and to be presenting another top-notch card from legendary promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, to Canadian fight fans,” said Troy Wassill. Director of Programming, Domestic Distributors & Sports for Super Channel.

Lomachenko is regarded by many as the greatest amateur boxer of his time and arguably all-time having captured two Olympic gold medals (2008 & 2012) and three World Championships, reportedly losing only once in 396 amateur bouts.

Eight (7-1) of his nine fights during his three-year pro career have been in world title fights, including world title winning performances in two different weight classes, WBO featherweight and junior lightweight. Lomachenko has defeated world champions Gary Russell, Jr., Roman Martinez and Nicholas Walters.

Marriaga, who is moving up to junior lightweight to challenge Lomachenko, is a battled-tested challenger with good power and a strong amateur background.

In the 12-round co-feature, NABO & NABF lightweight champion “Sugar” Raymundo Beltran (33-7-1, 21 KOs) defends his titles against former two-time Interim World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Featherweight World Champion Bryan Vasquez (36-2, 19 KOs).

Mexico-native Beltran, fighting out of Phoenix (AZ), is a two-time world title challenger who is knocking on the door for another world title shot. Beltran is ranked No. 2 in the world by the WBO, World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF), as well as No. 6 by the WBA.

Vasquez, fighting out of Costa Rico, is rated the No. 1 lightweight contender in the world by the WBA

In the eight-round Super Channel opener, 2012 Olympic silver medalist Esquiva Falcao (17-0, 12 KOs), the undefeated Brazilian middleweight, steps up in terms of class opposition to face Ivan “Terrible” Montero (20-2, 8 KOs), of Mexico.

The Fight Journal’s Nicholas Walters vs. Miguel Marriaga Predictions!

walter-marriaga

On Saturday June 13, 2015, the WBA “Super” World featherweight champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters and challenger Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga will face off in The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The HBO telecast begins at 10:00pm eastern time.

The fight with Marriaga will be Walters’s first since knocking Nonito Donaire out last October.

Miguel Marriaga won by third round knockout over Carlos Fernando Perez Martinez last December.

Tale of The Tape

Age: Nicholas Walters 29, Miguel Marriaga 28

Current Status: Nicholas Walters – WBC Super World Featherweight Champion and #1 World ranking, Miguel Marriaga – World #25 rated contender

Professional Record: Nicholas Walters 25-0, 21 KOs, Miguel Marriaga 20-0-0, 18 KOs

Height: Nicholas Walters – 5 foot 7, Miguel Marriaga – 5 foot 7

Knockout Percentage: Nicholas Walters – 84%, Miguel Marriaga – 90%

Previous Fight: Walters 10/18/2014, Marriaga 12/19/2014

Common Opponents: None of Note

Credentials

Nicholas Walters has wins over Nonito Donaire (TKO 6) and Vic Darchinyan (KO 5).

Miguel Marriaga has a win over Christopher Martin (KO 6).

Strengths

Nicholas Walters is an excellent body puncher. He has a very good jab and an excellent uppercut. He has devastating power and great size for a featherweight. He can fight on the inside and outside.

Miguel Marriaga has good footwork and is a decent boxer. His strength is punching power. However, he also throws good combinations and is awkward in his approach at times.

Weaknesses

Nicholas Walters is a big puncher, but he tends to rely on that power at times when there is room to box, especially against a brawler like Marriaga. Walters gets macho at times, and it leads to him getting hit by punches he could otherwise avoid.

Miguel Marriaga seems to throw every punch with knockout intentions. It could catch up with him as he fights more skilled boxers.  Marriaga doesn’t have a solid pro resume, so lack of experience is a weakness.

Intangibles

  • Nicholas Walters has a potential big money fight set up with Vasyl Lomachenko should he win. Could his eyes be elsewhere on Saturday night?
  •  Marriaga beat Walters in the amateurs.
  •  Neither fight has fought much in the United States. Does the pressure of fighting in the Mecca of boxing cause either guy to press too much?

Predictions:

Robert Uzzell

Miguel Marriaga needs to fight like there is everything to gain and little to lose. Nobody is picking him to win. He is undefeated just like Walters so he hasn’t experienced any losses in the pros. He also beat Walters so that should give him confidence. All of the pressure is on Nicholas Walters. Marriaga should be loose and fight like he has no worries.

Nobody is talking about this fight, but it could be good. Marriaga is a big puncher, but Walters is too. Walters has a big edge in professional experience. I should also say that Marriaga beat him in the amateurs though. This is a dangerous fight for Nicholas Walters. He will be a big favorite and he has a big money chance on the line.

I think this will be a fun fight. It definitely will not go the distance. You have my word on that. Marriaga’s best bet is to throw punches in bunches and try to get Walters before Walters gets him. Mentally he has Walters thinking about his loss to him in the amateurs. He needs to stay in Walter’s head by popping him with some big shots early. Bring those amateur memories back.  I would like to see him test Walters’s body. Walters is an enormous featherweight. I don’t know how the hell he makes that weight. It has to take some kind of toll on his body. So hit him exactly there… to his body.

Walters has a powerful jab and it is a good one! Walters is also a devastating body puncher. So I’m sure he will give as much as he takes. People say Walters is one-dimensional. He likes to prove them wrong by saying he can box. If there is any fight to prove that to fans and media, this one is it. He has a dangerous guy in front of him and even though Walters likes to brawl, this could play into Marriaga’s strengths.

I’m going with Nicholas Walters in this fight. He’s a big favorite but I don’t think this will be easy. I could see Marriaga as one of those guys that loses, but is welcomed back on HBO because of his exciting style. Like a Matthysse type. So what I’m saying is don’t be surprised if both guys get hurt or knocked down. In the end, I think Walters’s will resort to a little boxing and I think his jab will carry him through enough trouble sports to earn a mid-rounds knockout. Uzzell’s Pick: Walters by mid-round TKO.

Chip Mitchell

I may be in the minority, but I think this matchup could be explosive! These two met in the amateurs and Marriaga won by score of 14-9. Walters believes he’s the top dog at 126 and he is ranked at #1 in the world. Vasyl Lomachenko may have something to say about that, but I digress.

Miguel Marriaga constantly moves forward and has stalked just about every opponent he’s fought. Guess what? He won’t have to worry about that with Nicholas Walters. He’ll be right there waiting for it. That’s what makes this fight a potential war. Also, if you watch Walters’s fight with Donaire and Marriaga’s fight with Smith, neither guy is Pernell Whitaker in the defensive department. Both guys can be hit and both come forward. You can’t ask for anything more!

For Marriaga to win, I believe his powerful left hook has to land. We know Walters can be caught and hurt. However, Marriaga may have to walk through something of his own to do so.

Walters must attack the body and use that potent jab in his arsenal. Walters is a great body puncher, but one thing about him most folks don’t know: Walters is a fantastic counter puncher. He can land his uppercut out of nowhere, as a lead or counter.

There is definite bad blood between these two and Marriaga should attack Walter’s early to see if he can weather the storm. Also, he might discover if Walter’s remembers what happened during their amateur meeting. Everything Marriaga throws has bad intentions and even though it could be his downfall, he needs to fight his fight on Saturday night. Marriaga throws combinations (a rarity these days at any weight class it seems), and he might need to do that to keep Walters off of him. In other words, his best defense is a good offense.

If it plays that way, we are going to have fireworks. The judges can take a sandwich break in this fight. It won’t see the final bell. The defensive flaws of both guys make this fight theoretically exciting before the first punch is thrown.

I’ll lean towards Walters in this one, but I think both guys are going to taste each other’s power. This won’t be an easy fight for the favorite. However, Walters’s combination of experience and extra components in his toolbox will see him to a stoppage win. Mitchell’s Pick: Walters UD 12

Walters-Marriaga; Verdejo-Najera Final Comments

Chip Mitchell

World featherweight champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters of Jamaica, and Puerto Rican lightweight hopeful Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo and their respective opponents, Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga and Ivan “Bam Bam” Najera appeared at a media workout in New York City today. The four undefeated fighters headline this Satuday, June 13th in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, with television coverage on HBO Boxing After Dark, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Walters (25-0, 21 KOs), from Montego Bay, Jamaica, who defeated Nonito Donaire to claim lineal supremacy at 126 pounds, will defend his world title against Marriaga (20-0, 18 KOs), of Arjona, Colombia.

Verdejo (17-0, 13 KOs), of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in his live HBO debut, will go up against Najera (16-0, 8 KOs), of San Antonio, TX.

The four gladiators boast a perfect combined record of 78-0 (60 KOs), which includes a victory by knockout ratio of 77%. Here is what they had to say:

NICHOLAS WALTERS:
“Marriaga [has] beaten me in the amateurs but I do not remember it. Besides those fights are four rounds. On Saturday we will be fighting 12 rounds. He may be bringing his ‘A Game’ but I am bringing my ‘A-Plus Game.’ I have trained for a knockout victory. I am going to destroy him.

“I am overwhelmed to be fighting at Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of Boxing, because so many of boxing’s great champions have fought here. It is hallowed ground. It is my honor and I want to give my best performance there. To be great…to be known as the best…you have to beat the best and I am ready to take on all champions in my division and beyond.”

MIGUEL MARRIAGA:
“Of course Walters doesn’t remember me beating him for a spot 9in Olympic qualifiers] …BECAUSE HE LOST! He’s not going to remember Saturday, June 13th for the same reason!

“I have the strength and the intelligence to beat him. I will use my strength and intelligence to beat him.

“After I beat Walters again on Saturday I look forward to unifying the titles in my next fight.”

FELIX VERDEJO:
“It is an honor to be fighting on Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend in boxing’s most historic building, Madison Square Garden. I have dreamed of doing this for so long. And then on Sunday I will be riding on a float in the parade. But first I need to prove myself worthy of these honors. Najera is my toughest test as a professional and I have worked very hard in training camp. I am prepared to go mano a mano on Saturday night. I will be fighting not just for myself but for the pride of Puerto Ricans everywhere!”

IVÁN NAJERA:
“I am ready for my moment – my date with destiny. I know this is supposed to be Verdejo’s big debut on HBO. But I am here to do what I always do – to spoil the party. I have sacrificed so much to be ready for Saturday night but I will be dining out on this victory for years to come. June 13 will be remembered as Iván Najera’s Coming Out Party!”

Seven things to know about Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters

Axe

Story by:  Chip Mitchell

Seven things to know about Nicholas Walters (25-0, 21 KOs) heading into his fight this Saturday night against Miguel Marriaga (20-0, 18 KOs) at Madison Square Garden:

1.  The WBA recently elevated Walters from WBA “regular” status to WBA “Super” champion status.

2.  He is the son of a boxer, Job Walters. Job Walters fought   former World boxing champions Kevin Kelly and Rafael Ruelas.

Here’s a picture and story of Job Walters in action

3.  He made a bold prediction in his biggest fight to date by claiming he’d knock Nonito Donaire out in 5 – 6 rounds. He made good on it and stopped Donaire in the sixth round of their fight.

See Walters’s Prediction here

4.  Walters has stopped 11 of his last 12 opponents, none going more than eight rounds.

5.  This will be only his third fight in the United States and his first in New York City.

6.  His opponent, Miguel Marriaga (20-0, 18 KOs), beat Walters in the amateurs and has stopped 12 of his 13 opponents. Walters lost the amateur decision, 14-9.

7.  You ever wonder why he’s called The Axe Man? Here is a video on how he got that name below:

Why they call him Axe Man

Nicholas Walters vs. Miguel Marriaga & Felix Verdejo vs. Ivan Najera this Saturday on HBO!

walter-marriaga

By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (25-0, 21 KOs) will be defending his title this Saturday on June 13th against unbeaten #7 WBA, #9 WBC Miguel Marriaga (20-0, 18 KOs) on HBO Championship Boxing from Madison Square Garden in New York. In the co-feature bout, undefeated WBO Latino lightweight champion Felix Verdejo (17-0, 13 KOs) will be defending his title against unbeaten Ivan Najera (16-0, 8 KOs).

Walters has a really tough fight on his hands, as the Colombian Marriaga defeated him when the two of them were fighting in the amateurs. Walters, 29, has since found success at the pro level in capturing the vacant IBF featherweight title three years ago with a win over Daulis Prescott.

Walters has since beaten the likes of Nonito Donaire, Vic Darchinyan, and Albert Garza in stopping all three of them. However, Donaire had Walters badly hurt in the 2nd round of their fight last October, and Walters was fortunate to make it out of the round because he was ready to be stopped at that point. That one incident showed how vulnerable Walters is. He’s good at avoiding incoming fire, but once he does get hit, Walters is very beatable.

Marriaga, a six year pro, has destroyed 18 of his 20 opponents in impressive fashion. However, Marriaga’s opposition has been mostly poor to stay the least. The best guy that he’s fought thus far was Christopher Martin, who Marriaga stopped in six rounds last October.

No one had ever stopped Martin before in his career until that fight. Gary Russell Jr., the current WBC featherweight champion, defeated Martin by a 10 round decision last December, but he wasn’t able to do what Marriaga did to him.

If Marriaga is able to get to Walters early, we could see an upset in this fight. I wouldn’t call it a big upset because the jury is still out on Walters. He’s a big puncher, but he doesn’t appear to be in the same class as WBO featherweight champion Vasy Lomachenko, who Walters will likely be facing at some point in the near future.

They’re both promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank, and as long as he doesn’t mess up the fight by letting it marinate too long, it could be an interesting one in the future if Marriaga doesn’t foul things up for him on Saturday by beating Walters.

The fact that Arum is letting Walters face Marriaga suggests that he’s pretty confident that he can beat him. This could blow up the 83-year-old promoter’s face in the same way that he blew it with the Yuriorkis Gambos vs. Juan Manuel Lopez fight when Arum let the fight marinate too long and Lopez wound up getting beaten twice by Orlando Salido.

#3 Verdejo should have no problems beating Najera. This is a mismatch even though Najera has an unbeaten record. The 22-year-old Verdejo is a far better fighter than Najera can ever hope to be, and it’s not going to go the distance. This is a safe fight for Verdejo, who will likely be winning a world title in the near future. Verdejo is being steered towards WBA champions Richard Abril and Darleys Perez. He’ll get one of those guys and likely have no problems beating one of them to win a world title.

The Walters-Marriaga fight card will start on HBO at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
